What is LAP-BAND® System Surgery?

north texasLAP-BAND® System surgery is one of the most popular weight loss surgery options.  It is an effective, yet minimally-invasive treatment for obesity.  Unlike Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries, LAP-BAND® System surgery does not involve stapling or removal of parts of the stomach or intestines.  Instead, a small adjustable band is placed around the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach.

Benefits of LAP-BAND® System Surgery

The LAP-BAND® System surgery:

* Helps patients achieve needed weight loss.  Studies suggest that, one year after LAP-BAND® System surgery, the average patient loses approximately 45 percent of his or her excess body weight.
* Improves many obesity-related health problems, including: high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, and degenerative joint disease.
* Does not require re-routing of the stomach or intestines.  This often makes the recovery time shorter and easier.
* The band can be adjusted or removed, depending on the patient’s needs.
* Is laparoscopic.  In general, minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedures cause minimal scarring, pose less of a risk than more invasive techniques, and promote a quicker, easier recovery.

Risks of LAP-BAND® System Surgery

Although LAP-BAND® System surgery is minimally invasive, it does have risks.  Possible complications include slippage, stomach wall deterioration, formation of ulcers, vomiting, indigestion, and bloating.  Finally, patients are not guaranteed any particular weight loss amount after LAP-BAND® System surgery, particularly if he or she does not adhere to guidelines for life after weight loss surgery.

If you are an appropriate candidate for obesity surgery the LAP-BAND® System surgery is one of several options available for your consideration.  Contact Bariatric Solutions to schedule a consultation to discuss the procedure and whether its benefits and risks make it the right treatment for you.

The LAP-BAND® System Surgery Procedure

Dr. Scott Stowers and Dr. Dirk Rodriguez at Bariatric Solutions perform the LAP-BAND® System surgery at Wise Regional Health System. To begin the LAP-BAND® System surgery, the patient is given anesthesia. The surgeon then makes a small incision into the abdomen, through which he inserts the gastric band.  He then maneuvers the band into place (around the upper part of the stomach).  The band contains an inflatable tube that the surgeon fills with saline solution.  The tube expands and constricts the gastric band, which in turn constricts the stomach.   Finally, the surgeon completes the procedure by suturing the incisions closed.  He can adjust the band as needed at a later date by adding or removing saline solution.

After surgery, our team is committed to helping patients through the recovery process.  If you are considering LAP-BAND® System surgery, you can find exceptional treatment and aftercare at Bariatric Solutions, including nutritional and psychological counseling and obesity surgery support programs.
